{"id":5284,"date":"2011-11-10T20:17:04","date_gmt":"2011-11-10T20:17:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.artoronto.ca\/?p=5284"},"modified":"2012-11-30T14:48:04","modified_gmt":"2012-11-30T19:48:04","slug":"recounting-lost-heritage","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/v2.artoronto.ca\/?p=5284","title":{"rendered":"Susan Hiller: The Last Silent Movie"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: left;\">PREFIX INSTITUTE OF CONTEMPORARY ART<br \/>\nSeptember 22\u2013November 26, 2011<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Mysticism and intrigue are both key themes in Susan Hiller\u2019s \u201cThe Last Silent Movie.\u201d\u00a0 This video projection and collection of etchings is based upon the recordings of some of the last remaining speakers of twenty-five endangered or extinct languages and plays a dual role as both a memento and a candid protest to the tragic loss of heritage and culture.<\/p>\n<p>Often including song, poetry and story-telling, these recordings are relayed in an informal setting evocative of a traditional movie house, with the translations being projected as subtitles on a fairly large wall. The recordings include Khulkhasi, Yao Kimmien, Jiwali, Ubykh and Welsh Romany.<\/p>\n<p>Common motifs of these recordings appear to be the loss of heritage, fear and concealment. All the twenty-four etchings present a single line that rises and falls depending on the unique elements of the specific utterance.
