Novka \u0106osovi\u0107 and Andres Bautista invite you into everyday domestic and communal spaces that dramatically altered by war. You are also asked to consider the inter-generational trauma that gets embedded into otherwise banal places.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The installations are abstract yet eerily provocative and impactful. They provide insights into the experiences immigrant and refugee families have when leaving war-torn countries for the safety of Toronto, or elsewhere in Canada or the world. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.artoronto.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/rsz_b_-_interior_1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.artoronto.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/rsz_b_-_interior_1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-42351\" width=\"350\" height=\"232\"\/><\/a><figcaption>Interior view of <em>Bedroom<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Bedroom<\/em> is an example of a domestic space transformed, or, as the artists suggest, &#8216;perverted&#8217; by acts of war. The room design based upon images and videos of war-torn apartments and bedrooms, often with floral patterned wallpaper. That soothing decoration became the backdrop of news and civilian coverage of conflicts, mortar shelling and sniper lookouts \u2013 creating a strong contrast between domestic life and history. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.artoronto.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/2-jpg-a-exterior-b-exterior.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.artoronto.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/2-jpg-a-exterior-b-exterior.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-42347\" width=\"351\" height=\"234\"\/><\/a><figcaption><br \/>Installation views of <em>Airport&nbsp;<\/em>and <em>Bedroom <\/em>at the Toronto Media Arts Centre<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Airport<\/em> depicts a communal space transformed with little efforts into a house, or perhaps just a hide, for refugee groups stopped and held in transit. The installation is based on images of the corridors and hallways where people with their luggage and worldly belongings live behind bed sheets, separated from other travellers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.artoronto.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Myseum.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.artoronto.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Myseum.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-42354\" width=\"351\" height=\"233\"\/><\/a><figcaption>Bedsheets of <em>Airport<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Airport<\/em> and <em>Bedroom<\/em> present spaces as dimensions of trauma as well as areas of\nrecovery where individuals and families face the challenges of the aftermath of\nviolence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>How do you begin to share the complexities of war and traumatic experiences with people who haven\u2019t lived them through? How do you engage those individuals who only know war through a Baudrilliard-like lens of distorted non-reality? <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.artoronto.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/rsz_1b_-_interior_2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.artoronto.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/rsz_1b_-_interior_2.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-42348\" width=\"351\" height=\"232\"\/><\/a><figcaption>View of <em>Bedroom<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Airport<\/em> and <em>Bedroom<\/em> create \u201creal\u201d places for visitors to sense these emotions and the nuances of war. With these installations the artists start a conversation that needs to be continued. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The project is personal for \u0106osovi\u0107 and Bautista, who are partners of Bau &amp; \u0106os Studio. They met as architecture graduate students at the University of Toronto and share common experiences, including childhood ones set against (and within) the violent backdrop(s) of political and military conflicts. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.artoronto.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/rsz_a_-_exterior_1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.artoronto.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/rsz_a_-_exterior_1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-42350\" width=\"351\" height=\"232\"\/><\/a><figcaption>Installation view of <em>Airport<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>\u0106osovi\u0107\u2019s first installation, <em>The Museum<\/em>, was a must-see, mentioned in top ten lists of Nuit Blanche, 2016. <em>Museum II<\/em> began to outline when images from the Syrian civil war brought back childhood and \u2018screen memories\u2019 (in Freudian terminology) for \u0106osovi\u0107.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Museum II<\/em> is a spatial exploration of terror\nand the tension that follows.
