In a nice ceremony at Ryerson Image Centre\u00a0the fourth winner of the Scotiabank Photography Award has been announced on April 29th, 2014.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Displayed on screens, major works and exhibitions\u00a0of the three finalists, Rodney Graham, Mark Ruwedel and Donald Weber, surrounded the guests. Through these “windows” visitors could\u00a0peak\u00a0into the different realms of the artists; the\u00a0violent, the idealized or the\u00a0nostalgic. The guests grew with excitement and anticipation as the jurors outlined the merits of each finalist.<\/p>\n

Edward Burtynsky,\u00a0the internationally renowned Canadian artist and chair of the Scotiabank Photography Award, explained that it was his\u00a0 personal experience that prompted him to create\u00a0this prestigious award.\u00a0It aims to boost the winner\u2019s international presence in the art world, and contribute to the reputation of Canadian photography worldwide. Three jurors selected a winner from twelve nominees in a \u201cstrict search for excellence,\u201d emphasized Jane Nokes, Director of Scotiabank Archives, Corporate Record and Fine Art Collection.<\/p>\n

The prize went to Mark Ruwedel, the creator of mesmerizing black and white and colored landscape photographs of North America.\u00a0\u00a0Upon receiving the award, the artist was speechless, saying that it was \u201creally cool\u201d and promised to make \u201clots of good work\u201d with the support provided.<\/p>\n

Attendees could contemplate\u00a0and enjoy the photographic\u00a0results from last year\u2019s recipient, Stan Douglas, in his exhibition at the Ryerson Image Centre, which will\u00a0be on display\u00a0throughout CONTACT festival.<\/p>\n

After the ceremony visitors looked at Ryerson’s photo collection and enjoyed the rest of the evening.<\/p>\n
