Pablo Picasso gift-in-lieu, 1979, MP78 Mus\u00e9e National Picasso, Paris(C) Succession Picasso, 2011 <span style=\"font-size: x-small;\">(C) RMN \/ Jean-Gilles Berizzi<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">In 2012,<strong> <\/strong>the\u00a0Art Gallery of Ontario (AGO) presents a major survey of masterworks by the most inventive and influential artist of the 20th century, Pablo Picasso. <strong><em>Picasso: Masterpieces from the Mus\u00e9e National Picasso, Paris<\/em><\/strong> features more than 150 highlights from the Mus\u00e9e\u2019s unparalleled collection, including paintings, sculptures, prints and drawings. The exhibition will be on view at the AGO for just 17 weeks, from April 28 through August 26, 2012.<\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align: left;\">The collection of the Mus\u00e9e National Picasso, Paris<strong><em> <\/em><\/strong>comprises more than 5,000 works that Picasso kept for himself and his family over the course of his career, ranging from informal sketchbooks to iconic masterpieces. <strong><em>Picasso: Masterpieces from the Mus\u00e9e National Picasso, Paris<\/em><\/strong> features<strong><em> <\/em><\/strong>is touring the world while the Mus\u00e9e undergoes a multi-year renovation, scheduled for completion in 2012.<\/div>\n<p>\u201cPresenting Picasso masterpieces to Canadian audiences is a major accolade for our country and the Province of Ontario,\u201d said President of the AGO Board of Trustees Tony Gagliano.\u00a0 \u201cThe AGO is most proud to host these artworks and honoured to provide the opportunity to experience one of the art world\u2019s greatest masters.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The AGO is the sole Canadian and final venue on the tour, which includes stops in Madrid, Abu Dhabi, Tokyo, Helsinki, Moscow and St. Petersburg, Seattle, Richmond, San Francisco and Sydney.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This is an extraordinary opportunity for Canadian audiences to view major works by Picasso, drawn from the world\u2019s most comprehensive collection of his artwork,\u201d says Matthew Teitelbaum, the AGO\u2019s Michael and Sonja Koerner Director, and CEO. \u201cWith <strong><em>Abstract Expressionist New York<\/em><\/strong>, this fall\u2019s <strong><em>Chagall and the Russian Avant-Garde<\/em><\/strong>, and now <strong><em>Picasso<\/em><\/strong>, AGO members and visitors have the chance to take an incredible, year-long journey through some of the most thrilling and significant moments and masterpieces of 20<sup>th<\/sup>-century art.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Exhibited chronologically and covering virtually every phase of the modern master\u2019s unceasingly radical and diverse career, <strong><em>Picasso: Masterpieces from the Mus\u00e9e National Picasso, Paris<\/em><\/strong> features:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>The Death of Casagemas,<\/em> one of the first works he created in Paris in 1901;<\/li>\n<li><em>Autoportrait (Self-Portrait), <\/em>the iconic 1906 self-portrait;<\/li>\n<li>the 1904 Blue-period masterpiece <em>Celestina (The Woman with One-Eye)<\/em>, and <em>The Two Brothers<\/em>, a 1906 work from his Rose period;<em><br \/>\n<\/em><\/li>\n<li>landmark African-inspired artwork that led to the advent of Cubism, including studies for the 1907 masterpiece <em>Les Demoiselles d\u2019Avignon<\/em> and <em>Three Figures Beneath a Tree<\/em>, 1907-08;<em><br \/>\n<\/em><\/li>\n<li>examples of his genre-defining Analytic and Synthetic Cubism artworks, including the 1909-10 <em>Sacr\u00e9 Coeur<\/em>, 1911\u2019s seminal <em>Man with a Guitar<\/em> and 1915\u2019s <em>Violin<\/em>;<em><br \/>\n<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Two Women Running on the Beach (The Race)<\/em>, a 1922 masterwork from his Neoclassical period, and 1925\u2019s <em>The Kiss<\/em>, from his Surrealist period;<em><br \/>\n<\/em><\/li>\n<li>a series of sculptures created during the Second World War, including 1942\u2019s <em>Bull\u2019s Head<\/em>, and two bronzes, 1943\u2019s <em>Death\u2019s Head <\/em>and 1950\u2019s <em>The Goat;<br \/>\n<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>The Bathers<\/em>, the 1956 life-sized, six-piece figurative sculpture series created during a summer in Cannes; and<\/li>\n<li><em>The Matador<\/em>, the famous self-portrait painted in 1970, three years before his death.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The exhibition also highlights Picasso\u2019s depictions of his numerous muses and mistresses, including 1918\u2019s <em>Portrait of Olga in an Armchair<\/em>, which features the Russian ballerina and Picasso\u2019s first wife seated on a Spanish tapestry, the background left purposefully unfinished. French surrealist photographer Dora Maar, who inspired his 1937 \u201cWeeping Woman\u201d series, is also prominently featured, as is Jacqueline Roque, Picasso\u2019s second wife and most-painted muse, depicted in the 1954 work <em>Jacqueline with Crossed Hands.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.artoronto.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/Picasso-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2256\" title=\"Picasso 2\" src=\"http:\/\/www.artoronto.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/Picasso-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"230\" height=\"326\" \/><\/a><\/em>Portrait of Dora Maar, 1937, oil on canvas, 92 x 65 cm, Mus\u00e9e National Picasso, Paris. As with <strong><em>Abstract Expressionist New York: Masterpieces from The Museum of Modern Art <\/em><\/strong>and <strong><em>Chagall and the Russian Avant-Garde: Masterpieces from the Centre Pompidou, Paris, <\/em><\/strong>AGO Members receive free admission and VIP access to the exhibition, among other discounts and benefits. A 296-page catalogue has been published to accompany the exhibition.
