In its\u00a0five months of being open to the public, the gallery has already hosted twenty\u00a0shows. I went to check out number 21&#8217;s opening reception\u00a0last Thursday night titled, <em>Architexture<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.artoronto.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/rsz_img_0344.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-21448\" title=\"rsz_img_0344\" src=\"http:\/\/www.artoronto.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/rsz_img_0344.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"368\" height=\"207\" srcset=\"https:\/\/v2.artoronto.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/rsz_img_0344.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/v2.artoronto.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/rsz_img_0344-150x84.jpg 150w, https:\/\/v2.artoronto.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/rsz_img_0344-250x140.jpg 250w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 368px) 100vw, 368px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I was fashionably early in my arrival which gave me a chance to speak with gallery co-director\u00a0Alex Buchanan. I learned that <em>Architexture<\/em> seeks to explore the relationship and personal reflection\u00a0we can experience with space and architecture. The works produced for this group show\u00a0aim to visually highlight this connection,\u00a0as well as\u00a0the sublime feeling of inspiration it can evoke within us. The towering form requires you to consider your position within this space both physically and mentally, while the white light emitting from the street draws you in. Courtesy of Project Gallery<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">In the two pieces titled <em>Taking Place 1<\/em>, and<em> 2<\/em>, the bold thickness of the brush strokes and the resulting shadows cast onto itself makes for a striking image. Artist Doug Temple sees it as an abstracted birds eye view of the city. It is easy to see where he is coming from. The white strokes that seem to intensify at a point, reminiscent of Toronto&#8217;s grid style layout.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.artoronto.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/rsz_img_0393.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-21455\" title=\"rsz_img_0393\" src=\"http:\/\/www.artoronto.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/rsz_img_0393.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"368\" height=\"207\" srcset=\"https:\/\/v2.artoronto.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/rsz_img_0393.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/v2.artoronto.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/rsz_img_0393-150x84.jpg 150w, https:\/\/v2.artoronto.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/rsz_img_0393-250x140.jpg 250w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 368px) 100vw, 368px\" \/><\/a>Marzena Kotapska in front of her work, <em>Big Sky<\/em> (right)<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Marzena\u00a0 Kotapska of &#8220;<em>Big Sky<\/em>&#8221; explains how for her piece, she took numerous urban shots in Toronto and used elements from each to come up with her final piece. Courtesy of Project Gallery<\/p>\n<p>One of the largest pieces in the show &#8220;<em>Shanty Town<\/em>&#8221; by Emerson Myers, breaks the idea of urban space down to its bones. It focuses on the materials we associate with our surrounding environment. In an area not traditionally known for its artistic community, Project Gallery is among several new spaces set to change this perception. With no plans to slow down, watch out for the addition of <em>Gallery Crawl<\/em> (Sunday October 20, 2013, 1 &#8211; 5 p.m.) and more exiting exhibitions\u00a0like Architexture from Project Gallery.<\/p>\n<p>Text: Rhys Male.
