When Tree Falls, currently showing at Pentimento Gallery in Toronto, is the first work I\u2019ve seen by artist Francis Muscat, but certainly not his first show. The invitation image\u00a0Fuck\u00a0U<\/em>\u00a0is a smooth carved wooden head with a splintered Mohawk, so I expected the work to be both skilled and \u2018edgy.\u2019 I was not disappointed.<\/p>\n

I was really surprised that visitors were allowed to touch the sculptures and feel the difference between the\u00a0 smooth texture that the artist created and the original wood as it was found.\u00a0Such a treat!<\/p>\n

In this show, inspired by the trees a beaver brought down near his home, Muscat has taken the rough remainders and given them new meaning.<\/p>\n

Some sculptures incorporate delicate figurative carving while others include glasswork\u2014a familiar medium for this artist. The motif of \u2018home\u2019 is strong whether it is \u2018pick-up-sticks\u2019 of glass arranged in a house shape\u00a0(Small House series, <\/em>2010) or a curving column of stacked wood and glass\u00a0(Volcanic Passion #2<\/em>, 2o12).<\/p>\n

I found this show contemplative, and an interesting juxtaposition of whimsy and strength. There\u2019s one piece\u00a0Greg 2<\/em>\u00a0that looks like the darkened wood has been flattened cartoon-like into spikey dark hair tipped with silvery-green and then merged with a clear glass silhouette of a man\u2019s head that\u2019s driven through the wood. I see the duality and more in the multiple shadows that falls against the wall.<\/p>\n

There\u2019s a lot to think about in this work\u2026 and the thinking is a pleasure.<\/p>\n
