Photo:Phil Anderson<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">\u00a0Upon meeting with documentary photographer , Vincenzo Pietropaolo at Toronto\u2018s <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">De<\/span> <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Luca Fine Art\/Gallery<\/span>, on Queen St. West, he explained of how he captured images of the Italian community as a young boy, an immigrant child. The camera allowed him access to another world. As a young man he played pool in a then local pool hall which is now part of a trendier world for visitors to the neighbourhood.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 His art practice has evolved into many photographic series and eight photographic books such as <em>Celebration of Resistance (1999),<\/em> <em>Harvest Pilgrims (2OO9)<\/em>, <em>Making Home in Havana (<\/em>2OO2) and <em>Not Paved With Gold(2OO6)<\/em> as well many writings and essays.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.artoronto.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/3_commmunity_meeting_with_government_officials.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1807\" title=\"Commujnity meeting with government officials\" src=\"http:\/\/www.artoronto.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/3_commmunity_meeting_with_government_officials.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"389\" height=\"263\" \/><\/a>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Commmunity meeting with government officials\u00a0 from Not Paved with Gold: Italian-Canadian immigrants in the 1970&#8242; \u00a9Vincenzo Pietropaolo<\/p>\n<p>Photographs from the <em>Not Paved with Gold<\/em> series, explained Pietropaolo, exemplified the disillusion many new Italian immigrants felt arriving in Canada expecting more opportunities than existed.<\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align: left;\">\n<dl>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Pietropaolo\u2018s latest book,<\/dl>\n<p><em>Invisible No More (2O1O)<\/em><\/p>\n<dl id=\"attachment_1808\">, is an exploration into the lives of Canadians with intellectual disabilities and their families. Like most of his photographic work it has a social commentary that gives us all a better understanding of his subject matter and tells a poignant story with pictures. All Pietropaolo\u2018s portraits are engaging and immerse the viewer into the world of the subject. Pietropaolo successfully takes the viewer with him into these new worlds.<\/dl>\n<\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.artoronto.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/invisible_no_more_pages_28-29.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1811\" title=\"David in his mother's arms, Quadra Island, B.C.\" src=\"http:\/\/www.artoronto.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/invisible_no_more_pages_28-29.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"363\" height=\"242\" \/><\/a>\u00a0&#8220;David in his mother&#8217;s arms&#8221;,\u00a0 from the book Invisible No More: A\u00a0 Photographic Chronicle of the Lives of People with Intellectual Disabilties.\u00a0\u00a9Vincenzo Pietropaolo<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Pietropaolo\u2019s exhibit at <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">De Luca Gallery<\/span> (June 3 \u2013 July 2) was just coming to an end and it had encapsulated much of his early work from the 1970\u2018s documenting, the Toronto Italian community, immigrant farm and factory workers in Toronto and workers from across Canada. One of his most memorable experiences as a photographer was documenting workers across Canada as part of a commissioned project by the Canadian\u00a0Auto Workers. He was allowed access to over 100 factories and workplaces across the country. When asked how workers felt about being photographed he said most were elated and asked what they should do. He asked them to just go about their work as usual. Some of the workplaces also thought, \u201cwhy didn\u2019t we think of creating a book commemorating our workers\u201d, explained Pietropaolo.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1810\" title=\"sock factory workers\" src=\"http:\/\/www.artoronto.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/31_garment_workers_in_sock_factory.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"389\" height=\"262\" \/>Workers in a sock factory in Toronto&#8217;s garment district. From Not Paved with Gold: Italian-Canadian Immigrants in the 1970s\u00a0\u00a9Vincenzo Pietropaolo<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">\u00a0He said while today we talk about eating \u201clocal\u201c produce consumers don\u2019t realize how many farms use migrant workers that leave their families for 3-6months of the year in order to support them. One photographic image in the exhibition captures this misery well. It is a letter written to a family in Jamaica from an migrant worker in Ontario.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.artoronto.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/27_migrant_farm_worker_letter_to_wife.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1809\" title=\"Tony Peart's letter to his wife\" src=\"http:\/\/www.artoronto.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/27_migrant_farm_worker_letter_to_wife.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"389\" height=\"259\" \/><\/a>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Tony Peart&#8217;s letter to his wife, from Harvest Pilgrims: Mexican and Caribbean Migrant Farm Workers in Canada.\u00a0\u00a9Vincenzo Pietropaolo<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">\u00a0All of the works in the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">De Luca Fine Art\/Gallery<\/span> exhibit were black and white silver gelatin prints. Pietropaolo has embraced digital photography as most professional photographers have partly because of the demands of the profession. The exhibition includes artist Tony Calzetta and mixed media artist, Francesca Vivenza as well as Vincenzo Pietropaolo.
