Photo: Phil Anderson<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800080;\">P.A: You have lived in Parkdale for some time.\u00a0 Has this shaped the work that you have done?<\/span><\/p>\n<p>L.J: I believe that all artists work in relation to their life experiences.\u00a0 Certainly having lived in Parkdale for more than ten years \u2013 a neighbourhood populated by people from many different cultures \u2013 has influenced my work.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.artoronto.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/Spirits-of-the-Grotto.3-jpg.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-10907\" title=\"SONY DSC\" src=\"http:\/\/www.artoronto.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/Spirits-of-the-Grotto.3-jpg.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"360\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a>The \u201cSpirits of the Grotto\u201d, Dufferin Underpass. Photo: Luis Jacob<\/p>\n<p>The project at the <strong>Dufferin Underpass<\/strong> is titled <strong>\u201cSpirits of the Grotto\u201d<\/strong>.\u00a0 It consists of 34 panels that look like a series of large masks.\u00a0 Each panel has two colourful \u201ceyes\u201d; together they look like spirits residing inside the walls of the tunnel and watching us as we make our way inside.\u00a0 I imagine that some of these masks will remind people of the fabulous costumes of the Caribana parade, or the demons depicted in Tibetan silk paintings.\u00a0 Some panels feature depictions of mirror balls, which remind me of places like the Beaver Caf\u00e9, Stone\u2019s Place, and Wrongbar, on Queen Street West.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.artoronto.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/Spirits-of-the-Grotto.2jpg.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-10906\" title=\"SONY DSC\" src=\"http:\/\/www.artoronto.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/Spirits-of-the-Grotto.2jpg.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"192\" height=\"288\" \/><\/a><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The \u201cSpirits of the Grotto\u201d, Dufferin Underpass. Photo: Luis Jacob<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800080;\">P.A: How do you feel the work connects with the Parkdale Community?<\/span><\/p>\n<p>L.J: I hope that people will bring their own perspectives to the ways they experience the artwork.\u00a0 To this end, it was important for me that each mask be endowed with a distinct personality.\u00a0 I hope people who live in the area will form unique relationships with the various \u201cspirits\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800080;\">P.A: This art work at the Dufferin Bridge underpass has been a big project.\u00a0 Is the final work what you had visualized?<\/span><\/p>\n<p>L.J: It was always my goal to make a work of public art that was not innocuous.\u00a0 This was one thing that was foremost in my mind during the two years it took to fabricate this work.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800080;\">P.A: This project had some collaborations in terms of design and creating the mosaic can you tell us more about these.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>L.J: I worked in with two amazing teams of people, one in Montreal and the other in Toronto.\u00a0 The metalwork was done by the folks at Punchclock Studio, on Sorauren, who developed a totally ingenious design for the metal structure.\u00a0 In Montreal I worked with the folks at Mosaika, who produced the beautiful glasswork.\u00a0 I was honoured to work with such dedicated pros!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.artoronto.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/Spirits-of-the-Grotto-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-10905\" title=\"SONY DSC\" src=\"http:\/\/www.artoronto.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/Spirits-of-the-Grotto-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"360\" height=\"210\" \/><\/a><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The \u201cSpirits of the Grotto\u201d, Dufferin Underpass. Photo: Luis Jacob<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800080;\">P.A: Does this project feel very different from your other art work?<\/span><\/p>\n<p>L.J: I don\u2019t believe that \u201cSpirits of the Grotto\u201d differs in any essential way from my other works.\u00a0 One important difference, of course, is that fact that this work is sited outdoors as a permanent work of public art.\u00a0 This certainly brings new complexity to the project, in terms of logistics and audience.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.artoronto.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/Spirits-of-the-Grotto.4jpg.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-10909\" title=\"SONY DSC\" src=\"http:\/\/www.artoronto.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/Spirits-of-the-Grotto.4jpg.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"378\" height=\"221\" \/><\/a><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The \u201cSpirits of the Grotto\u201d, Dufferin Underpass.
